Chinese artisans, carpenters, boat builders, and labourers were recruited under contract by the Germans.  Many of these Chinese made Rabaul their home.  Their hard work and largely undocumented and silent commitment to Rabaul and Papua New Guinea have helped to make the province and the country successful - culturally and economically.
